A Texas Heroes Day 2022 Event

Monument Hill State Historic Site • La Grange, Texas • Saturday, September 17

Descendants Reunion & Breakfast – 9:00am

Co-hosted by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas-Monument Chapter and the Sons of the Republic of Texas-Monument Hill Chapter, this reunion and breakfast is an invite-only event that is exclusive to descendants of Mier and Dawson Expedition soldiers. Reservations are required. Descendants should confirm attendance by September 5.

Public Memorial Ceremony – 10:00am

The traditional memorial ceremony will include guest speakers, wreath-laying, and a gun salute. Memorial wreaths in honor of specific Mier and Dawson Expedition members may be purchased as part of descendant registration. Ceremony seating may be limited. Personal lawn chairs are welcome and encouraged. The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook for those unable to attend in person.

NW Faison and Life at Perote Prison – 11:30am

Presented by Faison historian, author, and popular speaker, Marie W. Watts, the story is told through the eyes of Julia Sinks, 19th century Fayette County historian, who decorated the caskets of the Dawson men and the decimated Mier prisoners for the September 18, 1848 burial.

Texas Heroes Museum Special Tour – 2:00pm

Museum Manager Charles Murray will lead a special tour for descendants and Texas Heroes Day attendees. The tour will feature the story of Mier Expedition member Samuel Walker who helped create the 1847 Colt Walker Revolver.
